I am so very pleased to share that my test article for News For You was accepted--with a lot of red ink involved--and I will be writing the occasional article for them. I am looking forward to this new direction in my writing. I enjoy writing lower lexile stories and I think writing lower lexile news stories will be a natural outgrowth of that.

I am still writing blog posts for ReadAFun and am working on an eBook for them as well.

I haven't published any creative writing recently but am working on a few pieces from the creative writing class I am taking this semester.

I am still a volunteer editor for SouthWestWriters and CNM's literary magazine, Leonardo.

It's September already and the bite of roasting green chile is in the air! I am writing blogs for ReadaFun still, and doing some creative writing as well. No more pet blogs, I got burned out. I've been using my education background in a lot of work and am hoping to write more low lexile material soon. Many projects are in the works!

I have been writing short stories for World Readers again and blog writing for ReadaFun. I have also been ghostwriting blogs for BettaFishBay.

Creative writing has taken a bit of a back burner, although I am enjoying Cyberscribes immensely still.

My new author page is up on Southwest Writers!

https://www.southwestwriters.com/brenda-wolfenbarger/

My noggin' sure looks big!

On the actually getting writing done front, I've got two stories off for submission and am working on polishing up another one. I've been delving into old files just to see if I can rework some old material.

Winter sniffles abound, so I made some honey/ginger/lemon "tea" mix. You layer ginger, honey, lemon, honey and so on until you fill a pint jar and leave it in the refrigerator. It is supposed to be soothing for cough and cold symptoms.

Life has been quite busy but I am pleased to be writing again.

I've found several writing resources to be useful.

So far I have participated with:

Cyberscribes, an online (for now) critique group on Meetup put on by Albuquerque Creatives.  Meetup is a great place to find other writers, support groups, and writing events.

The Querque Quills group on Facebook, put on by Plot Duckies, which offers a structured time to write as well as the opportunity to tap the expertise of Sonja Dewing.

The SouthWest Writers non-profit group, which offers workshops, education, author pages, writing groups, contests and much more.

I've got some short stories percolating and perhaps even a short novel. We'll see where it goes.

It's not that I haven't been doing anything for months, it's that I haven't been blogging about it on here. I haven't been writing creatively much, been sticking to writing and editing projects through Upwork.

Today's topic is short and sweet since I have some editing for someone else to do.

I joined Mastodon back in April and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I am slowly learning how to use it with the other droves of folks abandoning Twitter.

You can visit using this link here.  If you figure things out faster than I do, let me know.

Here's a useful beginner's guide.

Writing Takes Practice

So much of what writing is, is practice. You learn a new technique and it doesn’t immediately translate perfectly to your writing. Old habits are hard to break, New ones are difficult to form. Writing well takes, well, actually writing.

I try to write every day, even if it’s just a journal entry or a few sentences on a story. I try to read about the craft of writing or from an example of writing that inspires me. Recently I read a novel by Charles de Lint, a superlative fantasy writer. I spent a bit of time after finishing the novel wishing I wrote as well as he does. Obviously I shouldn’t compare myself to someone else but we all do.

I have a long row to hoe with becoming a good writer but I’m determined. I just have to keep writing, keep thinking, and keep working at it.

Rating Books On Amazon - those low reviews hurt!

If you are a reader on Amazon, you might not be aware that anything less than five stars has a negative impact on books. I didn't know that, either, until I joined writing groups. I try to read or at least page turn to the end of books so authors get paid for their page counts, and if I don't think it deserved five stars, I don't rate it. Sometimes I am frustrated with an author and wish they'd have hired a darn editor before publishing and if I paid cash for the book, I might think about putting it in the review. Many writers who self publish do not review their work nearly enough and it is rife with typos and grammatical errors. I hope mine is better than that! All in all this is a great learning experience. I have had ten downloads and one review, which is probably good.

More on Amazon ratings from Christopher D. Schmitz :

"Here is what each of those star ratings mean:

5: you enjoyed this book in the way that it was meant (has the expected tropes, themes, etc.)

4: you generally liked the book but you have at least one major issue with the book and it detracted from your enjoyment (lots of repetition in the writing, a major plot hole, far too many typos, etc.)

3: a novel you neither liked nor disliked—you didn’t care if you finished it or not. You might read it if you were stuck on a desert island and this was all you had… then again, you might use it for TP instead.  Because some advertisers and listing services don’t allow 3-star books, consider leaving no review out of apathy and sympathy. This review hurts an author’s rating.

2: the novel is plagued by multiple, serious issues and you want to prevent others from suffering in an attempt to read this book. There are typos on practically each page (lack of editing,) serious inconsistencies, or a glaring lack of research. There was a plot, characters, and setting, but you didn’t really enjoy it.

1: a colossal failure. You hate this book so much that it keeps you up at night—there was no plot. Don’t leave a 1 star review unless you truly feel the author should never write again—this is not the appropriate review to leave if you bought a romance that you thought was a “Clean Christian romance” from the cover/title but it actually turned out to be an Amish bodice ripper."

The Business of Writing

It may all seem haphazard, but the business of writing is complicated and I am just now beginning to sort it out. There is far more to writing than just sitting down and pounding out a story on the keyboard, I am afraid.

I've been busy establishing a Patreon account for when people are ready to follow me at: https://www.patreon.com/BrendaMaeWrites

and I've gotten my url (BrendaMaeWrites.com) redirected to this blog so that people who do not follow me on social media can keep updated!

I am also finishing up my latest romance story and hope to have it ready to send off to journals soon.

Be well and follow your dreams! Unless they lead off a cliff, in which case do NOT follow!
