Writing Takes Practice

So much of what writing is, is practice. You learn a new technique and it doesn’t immediately translate perfectly to your writing. Old habits are hard to break, New ones are difficult to form. Writing well takes, well, actually writing.

I try to write every day, even if it’s just a journal entry or a few sentences on a story. I try to read about the craft of writing or from an example of writing that inspires me. Recently I read a novel by Charles de Lint, a superlative fantasy writer. I spent a bit of time after finishing the novel wishing I wrote as well as he does. Obviously I shouldn’t compare myself to someone else but we all do.

I have a long row to hoe with becoming a good writer but I’m determined. I just have to keep writing, keep thinking, and keep working at it.
